This was exceptionally stupid, but when Danny left again House kind of missed him.

No, he told himself, he missed having someone cook eggs and tidy up. Insisted to himself, really. Because obviously House was not lonely.

He did, however, actually smile when there was a knock at the door and Danny was on the other side.

"Well," he said. "That took you long enough."

"I mean I didn't say it had to be a job," House said. "I wondered what you want to do. Hell, maybe you want to paint or write poetry or build chairs or something."

"What if I don't want to do anything yet? What if I just want to rest?" Danny asked.

House shrugged. "Sure. But you'll get bored eventually. Is the chicken done?"

"I think so," Danny said, not commenting on the boredom. He'd happily be bored right now.

He plated everything up and set it on the table.

Harry set the cake aside for now, and sat down with the wine. "This is, um, nice," he said.

"Yeah," Danny said. "I never- Um... I guess when I was younger, I never bothered making meals for myself. I'd just eat what I could get. Alex liked sitting to eat though, so... I learned to cook a bit from him. Now it's just a thing I do for myself when I can. ...And for you, when I can."

"Sometimes I forget to eat," House confessed. "I just get wrapped up in my work."

He took a bite, looking pleased as he chewed.

"What sort of work do you do the most?" Danny asked, genuinely interested in how Greg spent his time.

"I spend a lot of time in the workshop," House said. "Tinkering with potions and salves and elixirs... occasionally inventions. I do more of that than working on people directly. Saves more people in the long run."

"What sort of things have you invented?" Danny asked, pausing to eat a bite of chicken. "Anything I'd know?"

House thought for a moment and then asked, "Have you seen the Kingsguard with an artificial hand? Dragon took it. Anyway. I made the hand. Clockwork and enchantments."

"I haven't, but it sounds impressive," Danny replied.

[drfeelbad]

"One of the coolest things I've made," House said, looking slightly pleased with himself. "I did a lot more inventing when I was working for the king. I don't make weapons anymore. Armor occasionally though."

"What do you craft armor for? I mean, you don't want to work for the king, and I'd guess it's his men you suit up..." Danny replied.

"Kingsguard aren't the only ones who need protection," House said. "I have a few things that are sort of like... armor on demand. I could make some for you."

"You'd have to explain it to me, or show me. ...And honestly, Greg, I don't think I could afford something like that," Danny said honestly.

[drfeelbad]

"I'll show you later," House said. "I've got something in the workshop I think." He took a drink of wine. "At the very least I should keep trying to impress you."

"Why? So I'll sleep with you?" Danny asked bluntly. He wasn't trying to be rude or cruel- He simply was sometimes. It was Danny's nature to be on the attack at all times. To try and knock others off balance so he never felt weak.

"Don't have to impress me for me to put out. Just need some booze or good pills, usually."

Harry looked surprised for a second. And then snapped, "You were ready to sleep with me last night. Do I seem like someone who puts in more effort than I have to?"

"You seem like someone who needs people to be impressed with you," Danny replied. "For ego, for companionship, for whatever."

House scowled. "Or maybe, just maybe, I like you. Jesus."

[london_spy]

"Because I'm so likable," Danny replied. "I'm not even a good time anymore."

House sighed. Then brought the wine goblet to his lips and drained the rest of it. Then set it down again.

"Look, I don't know what you want from me. Maybe we're just both equally unappealing and that's why it works. And if you don't like me back... it's fine. You can still stay here. Though I'd rather you go back to your own bed to spare my remaining dignity."

"I never said I didn't like you," Danny muttered.

"I know," said House quietly. "Look, I just... I really do, okay? Like you. You're sharp and you're hot and you... care about things. Even if you don't care about yourself. And sometimes you can't exactly explain it, I just - like you."
